How Chicago Area Sleep Medicine Center Helps Insomnia Suffers Get Relief

By Allan Bigarda

Any type of sleep disorder will disrupt a persons life. It is difficult to maintain a good quality of life without adequate rest. Insomnia is the inability to doze off at bedtime. Other disorders are discovered while the individual is asleep. Any number of these sleep disorders can be helped at the Chicago Insomnia Diagnostic facility.

The first appointment at the clinic entails an evaluation. A physical check-up is conducted and a medical history taken. Physiological reasons must be ruled out as the cause of insomnia. When a full assessment is complete the process of monitoring sleeping patterns can start.

It may be stress related and that would explain why the client clenches his teeth while asleep. Restless leg syndrome is frequently found to be the causative factor. Sleep apnea is a serious disorder. The individual has lapses in breathing for brief periods of time. Often this monitoring discloses the condition for the first time.

Narcolepsy is a disorder in which the brain is unable to regulate the twenty-four hour cycles of darkness and light. The individual will be sleepy during the day and falls asleep suddenly in the middle of dinner or a conversation. This condition is a brain disorder not fully understood by the medical community.

It is identifiable by extreme lethargy during the day and cataplexy, a sudden loss of muscle tone. The loss can be triggered at any time. Usually the trigger is a response to an emotional upset of some kind.

Cartoons often portray characters sleepwalking and unknowingly walking off a cliff. It can be exceptionally dangerous in real life. People have been reported as driving a car while asleep in rare cases. Some may eat food or consume inedible substances, such as tobacco, during one of these episodes. They may also leave the home and walk around outside in their pajamas.

An overnight observation is conducted at the clinic to determine the cause of any one of these disorders. They are found in women more often than men. Unless resolved, insomnia can lead to dangerous episodes. In rare cases the individual may drive a car while asleep.
