Headache Sufferers In Raleigh Find Much-Needed Relief With Chiropractic Care

By Guy Stannard

Chiropractors all over the country see a lot of headache sufferers these days, and it's no surprise given the stresses of modern life. They tend to vary in how they manifest for each patient, but can usually be categorized as being migraine, tension or cluster headaches. Here, we will briefly explore these headache types and how a Raleigh chiropractic office can provide relief.

Easily the most common type of headache is the tension variety. These typically last for an hour or so (although they can last for days) and are often described as a dull ache or sometimes a band of pain around the head. They often result from overly tense neck muscles, which in turn results from poor posture and/or stress.

Migraines are the most severe form of headache and affect something over 20 million people in the United States. Deeply unpleasant, they tend to take the form of an intense, throbbing pain and can be accompanied by nausea. As with tension headaches, they can last for an hour or so, or they can linger for days.

Cluster headaches tend to be very painful, but short in duration. They get their name from the fact that they tend to appear in clusters of one to four headaches per day over several days. They also tend to occur mainly at night and are more common in men than women.

Whatever the headache type, manipulation of the upper vertebrae of the neck is usually of benefit. This procedure corrects the shape of the spine/neck continuum and alleviates muscular tension - a big factor behind most headaches. This technique is often performed as part of a wider care plan that includes additional interventions.

In keeping with their holistic approach to care, a chiropractor will look at each patient's overall lifestyle and seek to identify any causal or aggravating factors for headache. They may advise on workplace ergonomics, correct posture and stress relief techniques. Possible triggers will also be looked at, such as environmental toxins, allergens and even emotional factors.
