Important Tips On Eating Right And Getting Proper Nutrition

By Kristy Walker

There are a lot of health-food nuts out there, always pushing their organic and microbiotic products on you. But is this food really nutritious? The truth is that nutrition is a wide-ranging issue, and you need to be informed about every type of food. Read this article for some great nutrition tips.

Eat a lot of fruits, vegetables and nuts. You should try to eliminate snacking all together, but if you find yourself craving something to munch on throughout the day or for a midnight snack, try having a piece of fruit. It can be just as filling as a cupcake or cookie but it's a lot healthier and a lot less calories.

Find healthy alternatives to frying your favorite foods. Fried foods are bad for you. This does not mean you have to eliminate all your favorite foods from your household. Just find new, healthier ways to cook them. Instead of frying try baking, braising, broiling, steaming, or poaching your meals instead.

Make healthy substitutions in your favorite recipes. If there are certain meals you love to eat, try modifying instead of eliminating them from your diet. Skim or 1 percent milk in place of whole, low-fat cheese and butter substitutes all can allow you to keep your favorite foods on the menu.

You will want to consider pesticides and their effect on your food. They are generally portrayed as detrimental. But if you talk with farmers, you may come to a more nuanced view. For instance, you may hear that some fungicides are necessary; that a healthy crop cannot be produced without them, and that none of the chemical is retained on the produce you buy.

When buying prepared foods, avoid those that have sugar, corn syrup or fructose listed among the first several ingredients. Try your best to look for alternatives that have a low sugar content. There are now many foods available, including mayonnaise, salad dressing and ketchup, that you can buy in sugar-free versions.

Find foods that contain inulin. It's found in leeks, garlic and artichokes. It can help you lose weight and avoid digestive issues. Garlic is great in that it gets rid of the toxins and free radicals in your body. If you don't want "garlic breath", blanch the garlic before you eat it or take a supplement.

Peanut butter is a great source of protein, but you should eat natural peanut butter. The ingredients are usually just peanuts and salt. Regular peanut butter contains hydrogenated fats and sometimes extra sugar or other ingredients. Since there is no hydrogenated fat, the oil will float to the top in the natural peanut butter. You will need to store it in the refrigerator and stir it before use.

Make sure that your food choices really are healthy and nutritious. It's easy to assume that you are eating a healthy diet when you aren't. Many foods are advertised as being healthy choices, but are actually no better than the unhealthy alternatives. Be sure to do your research to find out which foods really are good for you.

Don't stuff yourself at the table if you want to eat a healthy diet. Many people make the mistake of thinking they should feel stuffed after a good meal. Instead, you should just feel satisfied. Serve yourself smaller portions and use smaller dishes, so that you don't feel compelled to eat as much.

Believe it or not, salad is not always your best bet when it comes to dining out. Fast food restaurants and chain eateries often offer up side salads that reach into the thousand calorie range - and that's before you add dressing and croutons. If you are at a restaurant and the salad still looks like your best bet, ask your waiter to bring out the dressing on the side. This ensures that you will not be forced into consuming an unnecessarily generous amount of dressing. Better yet, opt for fat-free dressings.

Now that you know a little more about nutrition, you can see that it's not very difficult to stay properly nourished. There are many foods out there with great health benefits and many ways that you can stay as healthy as possible, just by simply making a few changes. Use these tips to help balance your nutrition.
