Know Which Spirometer To Use

By Marsha Klein

Life today has become easier and safer due to the scientific advances that we see today. Our lungs are one of the irreplaceable organs that we have in our bodies. Today we see that there are many diseases that can harm our lungs more than any other organ. This is why it is necessary to have a regular check on our lung functions. There is one device that can help you check your lung function easily, this device is the spirometer.

This machine is not just a single device. There are many kinds of machines that falls under this category. All the devices work to measure lung capacity and functioning, while some can even help your lung recuperate. The Pneumotachometer is a commonly used machine that can be used in any environment. The machine does not require the patient to breathe in any controlled environment to get the correct readings.

Another common device is the whole body plethysmograph. This device requires the patient to occupy an enclosed space, generally the size of a telephone booth. Having been placed in the enclosed space, the patient is given a device to breath into and out of. As the patient breathes in and out the meter records the air breathed in and out.

There is an electronic version uses ultrasonic transducer and pressured measurements to measure the air flow. There is not requirement of meshes or moving machine parts. The entire calculation method is mechanical, so there are less chances of devices having any wrong readings. The speed of the airflow is what can help the measurement.

One variety of this device, the incentive spirometers, not just measures but also helps recover. The device can be used on any recovering patient whose lung power needs to be improved. Essentially after being blown into, the device releases a backflow that helps open the lung alveoli.

Another device which is known as the peak flow device helps measure airflow. The machine is popular since the device is a hand held device. The air flow can be measured to ensure whether there is any obstruction in the lung or not. If there is any blockage then this is the best device that can be used to understand any such problems.

One device uses rotating disks to measure the airflow. The windmill-type or spiropet uses these rotating discs in a hand held device to measure. Most people need expert supervision since the device must be held horizontally to get the right measurements. If the device is held wrong then the device

The tilt type is another type of spirometer that can help you to get correct measurements. If the angle the device is held in is incorrect then the device can give you incorrect readings. There are some varieties that can easily be used to measure lung capacity on the go. So, you can use the devices without expert supervision.
